Pope Francis was hospitalized with bronchitis that developed into bilateral pneumonia. Doctors considered stopping treatment due to his critical condition.

Pope Francis was hospitalized on February 14 due to a bout of bronchitis that developed into bilateral pneumonia. The Pope was so close to death during his 38-day battle with the disease that his doctors considered stopping treatment so he could die peacefully. This is reported by Reuters writes UNN.

Details

Sergio Alfieri, a doctor at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, said that after a respiratory crisis on February 28, when Francis almost choked on vomit, "there was a real risk that he might not survive."

We had to choose whether to stop there and let him go, or move forward and insist on it with all possible medicines and therapies, taking the highest risk of damaging his other organs. In the end, we went this way

- he added.

"Try everything, don't give up," came the message from Massimiliano Strappetti, the Pope's nurse

- said Alfieri.

Recall

Pope Francis has been in a Roman hospital for a long time due to bilateral pneumonia, which threatened his life. Doctors have refrained from making forecasts for a long time.

Earlier, UNN reported that the Pope, sitting in a wheelchair, addressed the public from the balcony for the first time after 37 days of hospitalization. He thanked them for their support, but looked weak and needed oxygen therapy.
