The junta of Niger has terminated the military cooperation agreement with the United States, ending the presence of the US military and the operation of the US drone base in the country.
Niger's junta has announced the immediate termination of a military cooperation agreement with the United States, AFP reports, UNN writes. The statement was made a day after a three-day visit by a high-level US delegation to restore contacts with the country's authorities.
Details
The agreement allowed US military and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense to stay in the country. An American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base operates in northern Niger.
Niger, a former colony of France, remained one of the West's last allies in the Sahel. In the summer of 2023, a military coup took place in the country. After that, Niger began to sever relations with Western countries, including France. In December 2023, the military authorities abandoned two defense agreements with the European Union.
