Latvia strengthens security of dam and gas storage due to threat from Russia

Prime Minister of Latvia Andris Kulbergs announced the strengthening of security of the hydroelectric dam and gas storage due to intelligence data about a threat from Russia. He appealed to NATO for additional air defense systems and troops.

Latvia has strengthened security around a hydroelectric dam upstream from its capital Riga and at a vast underground gas storage facility due to intelligence indicating a threat from Russia. This was stated in a comment to Reuters by the country's Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, reports UNN.

According to him, he spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and asked the alliance for additional air defense assets and an increase in the number of allied troops on the ground, especially regarding energy facilities.

He also requested the rapid integration into NATO's defense system of a counter-drone system being developed in Latvia with assistance from Ukraine. The other day, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned Russia against conducting provocations "under a false flag, using Ukrainian drones".
In turn, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that Vilnius has intelligence data that Russia is planning attacks on infrastructure, and this Baltic country will strengthen the protection of energy and transport facilities as a precautionary measure.
