The Odesa regional state administration plans to start growing cotton in Odesa region this year, and the sowing campaign could start by the end of April if changes to legislation to allow registration of cotton varieties, including genetically modified ones, are adopted quickly.
This year, cotton cultivation is planned to start in Odesa region. This was announced by the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleh Kiper, UNN reports.

He clarified that cotton cultivation is favored by ideal weather conditions and the unique properties of the plant, which are used not only in the textile and agricultural sectors.
"At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada is considering draft laws that will allow the registration of rights to cotton varieties, including genetically modified ones.
If the amendments to the legislation are adopted promptly, the sowing campaign can start as early as the end of April, and this year we will have the first harvest of Odesa cotton," Kiper argued.
