According to three sources, Israel has shared its plans with its neighbors Egypt and Jordan, as well as the United Arab Emirates, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020.

Saudi Arabia, which has no ties to Israel and which halted the US-mediated normalization process after the October 7 war in Gaza, was also reportedly informed.

The sources did not specify how the information reached Riyadh, which officially has no direct channels of communication with Israel. The sources also mentioned Turkey.

According to Reuters, the initiative does not indicate an imminent end to the Israeli offensive, but it does show that Israel is reaching beyond traditional Arab mediators such as Egypt or Qatar as it seeks to shape the post-war order of Gaza.

"Israel wants this north-south buffer zone between Gaza and Israel to prevent any Hamas or other militants from infiltrating or attacking Israel," a senior regional security official said.
