Ireland to begin phasing out free housing for Ukrainians in August

Starting in August, Ireland will begin a gradual transition from free state-provided housing for Ukrainians to independent renting. This was reported by The Sunday Times, according to UNN.

According to Minister of State for Integration Colm Brophy, the changes will affect approximately 16,000 Ukrainians currently living in hotels and state-owned facilities.

The transition period will last about six months. Ukrainians will be given at least three months' notice regarding the need to move out.

The authorities acknowledge that some people may be left without housing, but they expect that the majority will be able to find rentals on their own.

Reasons for the changes

The government explains the reform by the overcrowding of the accommodation system and the need to level the playing field between Ukrainians who already have long-term housing and newcomers who are only provided with short-term accommodation.

The government also plans to phase out the €600 monthly payments for families hosting Ukrainians by March 2027.

Human rights organizations warn that such changes could lead to an increase in homelessness and additional pressure on the rental market.
