The head of the border service department agreed to help smuggle contraband cigarettes to Romania for a bribe. He and the organizer of the scheme were exposed by prosecutors together with the SBU.
In the Chernivtsi region, law enforcement officers notified the head of one of the border detachment's departments of suspicion. According to the investigation, he agreed to help smuggle contraband cigarettes into Romania for a bribe. This was reported by UNN with reference to the Office of the Prosecutor General.
Prosecutors of the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor's Office, together with the SBU, exposed the head of one of the departments of the 31st border detachment. According to the investigation, the official in Bukovyna accepted an offer of undue advantage for assistance in the illegal smuggling of cigarettes into Romania outside official checkpoints
Law enforcement officers established that at the end of April this year, a woman who is currently in custody in another criminal proceeding approached him and offered the official cooperation. In particular, for each illegally smuggled box of cigarettes, he was to receive an undue advantage.
The official agreed to report official information about the location of photo traps and border patrols, determine safe times and routes for smuggling, change the routes of subordinates to avoid exposing the smugglers, and also transport tobacco products in his own car through a stationary checkpoint, hoping to avoid inspections
In addition, to avoid suspicion, the scheme participants agreed to transfer the undue advantage after the border guard was transferred to another place of service.
The head of the border service department was notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and the organizer of the scheme under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. She is in custody
Currently, the border guard has been remanded in custody with an alternative of bail of over UAH 180,000, and he has also been suspended from his position.
