The German federal government approved the draft budget for 2027, which provides 11.6 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine. Defense spending will increase to 109.7 billion euros, and new borrowing will amount to 118.7 billion euros.

The government draft stipulates that Germany's defense budget in 2027 will amount to 109.7 billion euros – approximately a third more than this year. In addition, 11.6 billion euros are planned to be allocated to support Ukraine in its defensive war against russia.
The total volume of federal budget expenditures in 2027 is to be 555.4 billion euros, compared to 524.5 billion euros in 2026.
At the same time, the draft provides for new borrowings in the amount of 118.7 billion euros. Together with the attraction of funds from special funds for infrastructure development, achieving climate neutrality, and for the Bundeswehr, the total volume of new debt obligations in 2027 could reach about 200 billion euros.
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil defended the increase in government borrowing. "You cannot defend yourself from putin by adhering to the 'black zero' policy," he said, referring to Germany's long-standing course of a balanced budget.
After the government's approval, the draft budget will begin to be considered in the Bundestag. It is expected that parliament will adopt it in November.
