Ebola virus has already caused hundreds of suspected deaths in Africa - WHO

Details

As the head of the WHO noted, the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is deeply concerning. Currently, 82 cases have been confirmed, including seven confirmed deaths.

"But we know that the epidemic there is much larger. Currently, there are almost 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths,"

- reads Ghebreyesus's post.

At the same time, the situation in Uganda is currently stable, with two confirmed cases and one reported death. No new cases or deaths have been reported, the WHO chief added.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added: there is already a confirmed case of the disease in a US citizen in the DRC. He was subsequently transferred to Germany for treatment. Another American, who is a high-risk contact, was transferred to the Czech Republic.

These figures are changing as monitoring efforts and laboratory tests improve, but violence and insecurity are hindering the response. Additional WHO staff have been deployed to Ituri, the epicenter of the outbreak in the DRC, to support affected communities,

- the post says.
