China announces new 'goodwill' steps towards Taiwan after Xi Jinping's meeting with opposition

China announced a series of measures regarding Taiwan, aimed at demonstrating "goodwill" after the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese opposition leader Chen Li-wun. This was reported by the Xinhua agency, writes UNN.

Details

Among the announced steps are promoting the export of Taiwanese agricultural and fishery products, encouraging investment in mainland China, and partially resuming travel between the two sides. Beijing stated that these measures are intended to promote the "peaceful development" of relations across the Taiwan Strait.

Chen Li-wun's visit was the first such high-level contact in almost a decade. China also announced its intention to consider establishing a "regular communication mechanism" between the Kuomintang party and the Communist Party of China.

At the same time, the Taiwanese government emphasized that any political negotiations are possible only with official permission. President Lai Ching-te stated that Taiwan is open to dialogue, but not at the expense of democracy and national interests. Beijing, for its part, continues to avoid contact with the current authorities of the island.
