Beijing prepares for torrential rains amounting to a third of the annual precipitation in one day

Heavy rainfall is expected in Beijing over a 24-hour period, potentially bringing more than 150 mm of precipitation, and over 200 mm in some areas. The highest level of emergency response has been declared in the mountainous Mentougou District due to the threat of flooding.
Beijing is preparing for heavy rainfall that could bring more than a third of the annual average precipitation in China’s capital over the next 24 hours. Reuters reports, according to UNN.

Heavy rain is expected from the evening of August 11 through Thursday. According to the city meteorological service’s forecast, more than 150 mm of precipitation could fall in most areas of Beijing over 24 hours, and more than 100 mm over six hours.
In the Tongzhou, Daxing, Fangshan, Mentougou, Huairou and Fengtai districts, precipitation could exceed 200 mm in a day. For comparison, Beijing’s annual average precipitation is about 528 mm, most of which falls between June and September.
The rain is expected to intensify due to a combination of moisture from Typhoon "Dolphin" and cool air over northern China.
In the mountainous Mentougou district in western Beijing, authorities declared the highest level of emergency due to the threat of flooding. Residents were urged not to leave their homes unless necessary and to avoid traveling to mountainous areas and places near rivers.
