Details

The consulate is adjacent to the Iranian Embassy and the ambassador's residence, and is located next to Al Razeh Hospital in the Al Maza district.

The strike killed General and Commander of the Syrian and Lebanese forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammad Reza Zahedi.

Iranian state television also reported that several Iranian diplomats had been killed.

The Iranian-affiliated Fars News agency confirmed the death of Mohammad Zahedi. Iran's Irna news agency reported, citing the press service of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, that General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi and five other members of the IRGC were also killed in the attack on the consulate.

An AFP correspondent who arrived at the scene reported that the consulate building was completely destroyed.

The Syrian state news agency SANA reported an unspecified number of dead and wounded.

Context

After Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, Syria and Iran supported the terrorist organization's fighting. Israel has intensified air strikes against Hezbollah militias in Syria. On January 20, it was reported that the head of Iranian intelligence in Syria and four other members of the IRGC were killed in a missile strike on a district of Damascus. Iran accused Israel of the attack.

On March 29, 2024, a strike was launched on the territory near the city of Aleppo, killing at least 42 people. The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that Israeli Air Force aircraft had fired on the country's territory. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strike was aimed at a weapons depot belonging to the Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah.
