According to the U.S. Navy, the service member went missing on Thursday night from the amphibious assault ship USS Anchorage during joint exercises of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
On Friday evening, the Navy officially transitioned the operation from search and rescue to search and recovery. The name of the Marine is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Three surface ships and 12 aircraft from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force have been involved in the search. In total, they have already surveyed approximately 6,200 square kilometers of water area.
