When and how to see the unique Eta Aquariid meteor shower in Ukraine

The peak of the Eta Aquariid meteor shower is expected on the night of May 7. Up to 30 bright objects per hour will be visible in the sky over Ukraine.

When and how to see the unique Eta Aquariid meteor shower in Ukraine

On the night of May 6-7, Ukrainians will be able to observe the Eta Aquariid meteor shower. The period of activity for this phenomenon lasts from late April to the second half of May, but its peak is predicted for these specific dates, UNN reports.

Activity Period and Peak

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is active every year from approximately April 19 to May 28. The highest intensity occurs on the night of May 6-7. During this period, the number of meteors reaches its maximum values for the shower.

According to astronomers' estimates, intensity in the Southern Hemisphere can reach up to 60 meteors per hour. In the Northern Hemisphere, including Ukraine, the rate is lower, reaching up to 30 meteors per hour under favorable conditions. The actual number of visible meteors depends on atmospheric conditions, light levels, and the observer's location.

Origin of the Eta Aquariid Shower

The Eta Aquariids are associated with Halley's Comet, which orbits the Sun with a period of about 76 years. During its journey, the comet leaves behind dust particles and small debris in space.

When Earth passes through this stream of particles, they enter the planet's atmosphere and burn up in the dense layers of air. This results in the light phenomena known as meteors.

The speed at which particles enter the atmosphere is about 65 kilometers per second. This speed affects the nature of the observed phenomena: the meteors have a short "lifespan" and leave behind glowing trails that can persist for several seconds.

How to See the Eta Aquariid Shower

Note that in 2026, meteor observation conditions will be affected by the waning Moon. Its light will reduce the visibility of faint meteors. Under such conditions, only the brightest objects will remain most noticeable.

Therefore, to enjoy this unique astronomical phenomenon, it is worth choosing locations with minimal levels of artificial lighting. Ideally, this would be an observation site outside the city, where light from streetlamps, signs, and buildings will not interfere with the visibility of celestial bodies.

An important factor is weather conditions, as cloud cover or fog will make observation impossible.

Separately, one should consider the adaptation of vision to the dark. To do this, it is necessary to stay in semi-darkness for at least 15–20 minutes before starting the observation. Bright light sources (including mobile device screens) reduce the eye's sensitivity and affect the ability to see meteors.

When and Where to Observe the Eta Aquariid Shower

The most favorable time for observation is before dawn. During this period, the shower's radiant rises higher above the horizon, increasing the probability of seeing meteors with the naked eye.

The radiant of the Eta Aquariids is located in the constellation Aquarius. For observers in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be positioned low above the horizon, which will affect the total number of visible objects.

Astronomers recommend scanning not only the area of the sky in the direction of the radiant but also other parts of the firmament to ensure seeing bright meteors.

Additional Observation Conditions

Observation does not require special equipment. To see the meteors with your own eyes, an open view of the sky is sufficient. Using telescopes or binoculars is ineffective due to their narrow field of view.

When preparing to observe celestial bodies, it is also necessary to consider the nighttime air temperature. Even in May, temperatures can drop, affecting comfort during observation. Therefore, it is worth bringing warm clothing and hot drinks.

It is also important to consider safety factors related to being in open areas during the dark hours. It is advisable to choose familiar locations or places with minimal risk levels.

Why Eta Aquariid Meteors are Unique

Meteors of this particular shower are capable of moving very fast. Some of them leave glowing trails that can persist for several seconds after the meteor itself has disappeared.

Occasionally, brighter objects occur among the meteors, standing out against the rest. Their appearance depends on the size of the particles entering the atmosphere.

The intensity of the shower varies depending on natural conditions and the Earth's position within the particle stream. Under favorable conditions, observing this natural phenomenon is possible for several hours during the night and morning.
