What is celebrated on July 14 in Ukraine and the world

On July 14, the world celebrates the French national holiday — Bastille Day, as well as Shark Awareness Day and International Non-Binary People's Day. According to the new church calendar in Ukraine, the Apostle Aquila is commemorated. UNN will tell about the main events of July 14.

Shark Awareness Day

An important environmental initiative. Despite the terrifying image created by cinema, sharks play a critical role in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems. Today, ecologists call for stopping their mass extermination (especially for shark fins) and debunk myths about these ancient predators.

International Non-Binary People's Day

A day aimed at raising awareness about the issues faced by people whose gender identity does not fit into the traditional binary system, exclusively male or exclusively female. The date was chosen specifically: it falls exactly halfway between International Women's Day and International Men's Day.

Bastille Day in France

The most important holiday of the country. On July 14, 1789, an armed crowd of Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress-prison, marking the beginning of the French Revolution. Traditionally, a grand military parade takes place on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, along with large-scale fireworks near the Eiffel Tower.

National Mac and Cheese Day

A world-famous gastronomic holiday dedicated to the iconic dish Macaroni and Cheese. This is the best occasion for a hearty comfort dinner.

Pandemonium Day

A humorous and psychological holiday. It calls for letting go of control for at least one day, not getting upset if plans go awry, and allowing yourself to be a little in chaos, relieving stress from constant planning.

National Tape Measure Day

On July 14, 1868, inventor Alvin Fellows patented the spring-loaded tape measure in a metal case — a tool without which no construction or repair can do today.

National Nude Day

An unofficial holiday for supporters of naturism who advocate for the right to harmony with nature without clothing.

Commemoration Day of the Apostle of the Seventy Aquila

According to the new (New Julian) calendar, on July 14, Saint Aquila, a disciple of the Apostle Paul, is honored. In ancient times, this day was popularly called "Aquila, the Watchers." Peasants went to the fields "on watch" to monitor the harvest and protect it from bad weather and strong winds. It was also believed that from this day, summer begins to wane.

For those who follow the old (Julian) calendar: on July 14, the memory of the holy unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian is honored. The folk name of the holiday is "Summer Kuzminki." Traditionally, this was considered a purely women's day: women held gatherings, gathered together, cooked a communal porridge, sang songs, and rested from hard field work.
