Ukraine considers increasing electricity imports to minimize deficit amid heatwave

The Ministry of Energy is taking measures due to the abnormal heat to balance the energy system, considering in particular increasing electricity imports and accelerating repairs, including at nuclear power plant units, First Vice Prime Minister - Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal reported on Tuesday on social media, UNN writes.

The Ministry of Energy is taking measures to balance the situation in the energy system. Due to the abnormal heat that has covered Europe, the energy system is experiencing a particular strain

- Shmyhal wrote.

According to him, "in order to ensure stable passage of peak consumption periods and minimize the electricity deficit, I instructed the relevant services and enterprises of the energy sector":

  • to consider the issue of optimizing the schedules of the repair campaign at nuclear generation units to increase electricity production volumes during periods of maximum consumption;
    • to ensure the completion of emergency restoration works and the commissioning of thermal generation equipment with a total capacity of at least 300 MW in the shortest possible time;
      • to strengthen the involvement of additional capacity through cogeneration units, including gas generation, and also to prepare proposals for further liberalization of conditions for their effective operation;
        • to ensure the active use of energy storage units for additional coverage of peak loads and increase the available capacity of the system by approximately 300 MW;
          • to take additional measures to attract electricity imports from partner countries of the European Union and to work out the issue of increasing electricity imports by state enterprises.

            "Energy workers today are doing everything possible to ensure the stability of the energy system. But how critical the situation will be depends on each of us. We remember that reasonable electricity consumption during peak hours (17:00-22:00) is an important contribution from everyone to ensuring reliable electricity supply," the head of the Ministry of Energy stated.
