The South Korean court upheld the impeachment of President Yun Seok-yeol, finally removing him from office due to the short-term introduction of martial law in December. Early elections must be held in the country within the next 60 days. This is reported by NBCnews, reports UNN.

Details

On Friday, April 4, eight judges of the country's Constitutional Court unanimously ruled against 64-year-old Yun, finding him guilty on all counts. It cannot be appealed and means that elections must be held in South Korea in the next two months. The court hearing was broadcast live, and the verdict, which was read out, came into force immediately.

On December 3, President Yun shocked the country when he declared martial law, claiming that he needed to protect South Korea from threats posed by communist forces in North Korea.

He deployed troops to parliament, but legislators opposed the move. Then, six hours later, Yun lifted martial law, and later parliament impeached him.

The 64-year-old suspended leader spent several weeks trying to avoid arrest, remaining in his residential complex under the protection of loyal employees of the Presidential Security Service (PSS). However, the arrest did take place, but the president exercised his "right to remain silent."

Earlier, UNN wrote that when Yunu announced impeachment, South Korean Prime Minister Han Dok-soo took over as acting president. But he himself was impeached a few weeks later for his involvement in the martial law fiasco. However, the Constitutional Court of South Korea rejected the impeachment, reinstating Khan as acting president.
