The US Federal Communications Commission has adopted net neutrality requirements, reinstating an old rule that prohibits Internet service providers from favoring certain websites or programs over others.

The US Federal Communications Commission has adopted requirements for so-called net neutrality. This means that Internet providers cannot favor certain websites or programs. Reuters writes about it, UNN reports.

Details

The decision of the Federal Communications Commission is in practice a reinstatement of the old rule. It was first introduced by President Obama in 2015, but two years later, President Donald Trump canceled it.

Net neutrality is the principle that broadband providers and networks must treat all data traffic equally. For example, it prevents websites that are willing to pay from getting faster internet.

The telecommunications industry was against the neutrality requirement.

The decision was made along party lines. Democrats voted in favor of the net neutrality rule, while Republicans voted against it.
