Scholz to run for German chancellor again: SPD board approves nomination
Kyiv • UNN
The SPD has unanimously nominated Olaf Scholz as its candidate for chancellor in the early elections in 2025. The decision came after the rejection of the more popular Boris Pistorius and the collapse of the “traffic light coalition”.
The candidate for the post of Federal Chancellor of Germany from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in early elections to the Bundestag was the current head of government Olaf Scholz, writes UNN with reference to DW.
Details
The decision was made unanimously at a meeting of the party's board after a tough debate, German news agencies reported on Monday, November 25, citing participants in the meeting.
The decision comes after Scholz's running mate, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who has significantly higher approval ratings among voters, declined to run last week. Scholz's nomination will be officially confirmed at the party congress on January 11.
Supplement
On November 6, Social Democrat Olaf Scholz announced the dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner, chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). On the night of November 7, almost all FDP ministers announced that they would voluntarily resign. Thus, the ruling “traffic light coalition” in Germany, consisting of the SPD, the FDP and the Greens, collapsed.
Early elections to the Bundestag, as a result of which a new government should be formed, will be held in Germany on February 23, 2025.
