Russia uses Ukrainian prisoners of war to spread Kremlin propaganda — CPD

Russian sources have begun spreading videos featuring Ukrainian prisoners of war more actively, in which the prisoners voice talking points beneficial to Russian propaganda for promoting Kremlin narratives. The Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine reports this, UNN reports.

According to the CCD, Russian sources are distributing a video in which one of the Ukrainian prisoners of war voices claims about the alleged lies of the Ukrainian authorities and states that the participants in the Maidan protests in 2014 allegedly stood there for money. Such talking points are beneficial to Russian propaganda.

Using prisoners of war to record propaganda videos—prisoners who are subjected to torture and intimidation in Russia—is a typical tactic of Russian propaganda, despite the fact that this constitutes a gross violation of the Third Geneva Convention

The increased dissemination of such videos is part of Russia’s disinformation campaign concerning prisoners of war, the CCD reports. The enemy is trying to create the illusion that Russia allegedly treats Ukrainian prisoners of war better than Ukraine treats Russian ones, in order to shift the focus of attention away from the numerous cases of violations of international humanitarian law in Russian captivity.
