In Trinidad and Tobago, the remains of at least 50 infants and six adults were discovered in a cemetery in the town of Cumuto. This was reported by the BBC, citing the country's police, writes UNN.

According to law enforcement, the burial site is located approximately 40 km from the capital, Port of Spain. The preliminary theory being considered is illegal handling of bodies.

Police noted that five of the six adults had identification tags. Two of them showed signs of an autopsy.

The causes and circumstances of the bodies' appearance are currently being established. Law enforcement does not specify whether the incident is related to the country's crime rate.

Government reaction

Police Commissioner Alister Guevarro stated that the situation has caused serious concern.

Any person or institution that has broken the law will be held fully accountable

– he emphasized.

The country is under a state of emergency, introduced on March 2, which expands police powers.

At the same time, according to international bodies, the crime rate in Trinidad and Tobago remains high, despite some decline in recent years.
