People should feel responsible - expert explains how to encourage condominiums and housing cooperatives to join compensation programs for the purchase of power generators

The head of the Union of Consumers of Public Utilities calls on residents of apartment buildings to take the initiative in terms of alternative energy sources. The expert emphasizes the importance of awareness-raising and expansion of compensation programs.
Residents of apartment buildings should realize that they are co-owners of their buildings. And before the new heating season, which may be difficult, people themselves must take the initiative to participate in compensation programs for the purchase of power generators and other alternative sources of supply. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Union of Consumers of Public Utilities, Oleh Popenko, in a commentary to UNN.

According to the expert, first of all, people need to be educated that equipping their homes with an independent energy supply is an investment in their comfort, which will also be partially compensated by the local budget.
"First and foremost, we need explanatory work. Perhaps this should be done not directly, for example, from the authorities, but through the management company, with the advice of the heads of condominiums (Association of Apartment Building Owners - ed.), and conduct full explanatory work with people. Because, unfortunately, 90% of people living in apartment buildings do not even realize that they are co-owners of an apartment building, that they are responsible for ensuring that pumping groups work," said Popenko.
Also, according to Oleg Popenko, it is necessary to look for ways to expand the possibilities of programs to compensate for the purchase of alternative energy sources for apartment buildings.
"We need to purchase and introduce several programs at the state and local government level. Such programs that will allow co-owners of an apartment building to purchase all these generators, storages (electricity storage facilities - ed.) to ensure the supply of electricity," the housing and utilities expert summarized.
Recall
UNN has already written about the advantages and disadvantages of various autonomous energy supply systems, their cost and the amount of compensation from city budgets for their purchase under the relevant programs that successfully operate not only in regional centers but also in small towns.
In particular, in Brovary, almost two million hryvnias have been allocated for the purpose since the end of 2022.
"The corresponding program has been operating in our city since the end of 2022, and about thirty Brovary condominiums and housing cooperatives have already joined it, some of them repeatedly. The city has allocated almost two million hryvnias for compensation. In order to receive compensation for the installed generator, the management of an HOA or housing cooperative must apply to the city's Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Transport. The application is reviewed by a commission, which determines the amount of compensation and makes a decision at a meeting of the executive committee," Brovary Mayor Ihor Sapozhko told .
