Marcia Lucas, the Oscar-winning editor of Star Wars, has died at the age of 80. The cause of death was cancer, according to the film editor's family attorney.

Marcia Lucas, the Oscar-winning film editor who won an Academy Award for editing "Star Wars," directed by her former husband George Lucas, and who influenced the creation of several seminal films of the 1970s, died Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California. She was 80, writes UNN with reference to Variety.

A family attorney confirmed that she died of cancer.

"Marcia will be remembered as a brilliant storyteller, a pioneer for women in film, a loving mother and grandmother, a generous hostess, and a loyal friend whose humor and brilliance filled every room she entered. Her impact on cinema is unforgettable, but those who knew her best will remember how she made life brighter, more beautiful, funnier, and fuller of love," the family statement said. "Her work was known for its emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity—a rare ability to find the truth in a scene and bring soulfulness, momentum, and clarity to the screen."

Marcia Lucas, sometimes referred to as George Lucas's "secret weapon," was a co-editor on George Lucas's "American Graffiti," for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and later won an Oscar for editing "Star Wars." She also edited "Return of the Jedi," as well as Martin Scorsese's films "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," "Taxi Driver," and "New York, New York."
