Hungary may postpone the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU until March 2024, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is demanding a strategic discussion on supporting Kyiv. EU leaders will discuss this issue and financial assistance to Ukraine at the December summit.

It is noted that the summit of EU leaders on December 14-15 will discuss several issues related to Ukraine. The first of them is the start of negotiations on accession to the EU, as well as the provision of 50 billion euros of economic support and the allocation of another €20 billion for Ukraine's army. In addition, the agenda includes a new package of sanctions against Russia.

The publication emphasizes that securing new financial assistance from Europe is is critically important against the backdrop of problems with the approval of funding in the United States.

Hungarian Prime Minister Orban has already stated that he will block the issue of Ukraine. He is demanding a "strategic discussion" from the EU on supporting Kyiv.

European diplomats believe that Orban will support the applications of Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina for to join the EU were supported by Orban, but they will fail if Hungary vetoes Ukraine's application.

Senior EU diplomats commented to the publication that if Hungary blocks the Ukraine, the start of accession talks could be postponed until March.
