More than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested on Thursday on the campus of Columbia University after university officials allowed the NYPD to clear a camp set up by students protesting Israeli actions in Gaza.

Columbia University President Nemat Minoush Shafiq, who came under criticism from Republicans at a House committee hearing on anti-Semitism on campus a day earlier, said she allowed police to clear a camp of dozens of tents set up by protesters on Wednesday morning.

"Out of great concern for the safety of the Columbia University campus, I have authorized the New York Police Department to begin clearing the camp..." Shafiq said in a statement.

Shafiq said the protesters had violated school rules and policies on unauthorized demonstrations and were unwilling to communicate with administrators.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said police made more than 108 arrests without violence or injury. Police said the arrests were related to trespassing.
