Hungary's state television has temporarily suspended news broadcasts amid a reform of state media initiated by Prime Minister Peter Magyar to stop, in his words, "the propaganda of Viktor Orban's regime." This was reported by Reuters, writes UNN.

Details

The main state television channel M1 announced a temporary suspension of news broadcasts.

Public media cannot lie. We regret that we have done so for many years. Public media are being reformed to become independent and authoritative in the future. News broadcasts are temporarily suspended

– the statement reads.

According to local media, after the change in leadership of the state broadcaster, some television and radio journalists were dismissed. Reuters could not independently confirm this information.

Viktor Orban criticized this decision, calling it a manifestation of despotism, and urged Hungarians to watch a private news television channel.

Reuters recalls that during Orban's years in power, the authorities tightened control over state media, and Hungary dropped from 23rd to 74th place in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index.
