After England's defeat in the European Championship final, while the press and fans debate the fate of the team's head coach Gareth Southgate, King Charles is urging everyone - starting with the technical commissioner himself - to "hold their heads high" for getting a "great result".

The 75-year-old monarch issued a statement to the England national team after they lost 2-1 to Spain at Euro 2022 in Berlin last night.

It said, "While victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless, my wife and I join my entire family in encouraging you and your support team to hold your heads high . . . Anyone who has participated in sporting events at any level knows how desperate this result can be when the prize was so close. . ... And let's join me in offering our sincere condolences, even as we congratulate Spain. . ... But please know that your success in reaching the final of the European Championship is in itself a truly great achievement that brings with it the pride of a nation that will continue to roar for the Three Lions today - and in the many triumphs that I have no doubt lie ahead.

Southgate has been reluctant to discuss his future, despite the fact that on the eve of the European Championships he himself labeled victory in Berlin as a condition for continuing to lead the national team.
