In Zaporizhzhia, a 59-year-old woman was sentenced to 9 years behind bars for selling her 12-year-old son. She handed the child over for begging in exchange for 600 hryvnias per day.
Under the public prosecution of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor's Office, a 59-year-old mother has been convicted for handing over her own minor child to be used for begging. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, according to UNN.
Prosecutors proved in court that after losing her job, the woman initially used her 12-year-old son to collect money under the guise of charity, and in December 2020, she sold the child to a stranger for begging in exchange for a monetary reward of 600 UAH per day
The crime was uncovered thanks to a concerned resident of Zaporizhzhia, who informed law enforcement about the possible exploitation of a child.
The woman was detained when she brought the child for sale and received the funds.
The court found the woman guilty of human trafficking for the purpose of exploitation committed against a minor (Part 3 of Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced her to 9 years of imprisonment.
The child was removed and provided with assistance at a center for social and psychological rehabilitation.
