In Russia, the vegetable basket is rising in price twelve times faster than official inflation - intelligence

Over six months, from December 2025 to June 2026, the cost of a basic vegetable basket in the regions of the Russian Federation increased by 56%. As reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service, even in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which are traditionally considered showcases of the Russian Federation's prosperity, prices rose noticeably, reports UNN.

It is indicative that the very term used in the Russian Federation to denote this set of products originates from borscht, a dish that the whole world recognizes as Ukrainian, and which the Russian Federation has been trying to appropriate for years, even at the level of culinary terminology. Now the same country that claims someone else's cultural heritage is unable to provide its own citizens with cheap cabbage and beets for this dish. For comparison, official inflation in the country over the same period was only 4.64%. That is, prices for potatoes, cabbage, beets, carrots, and onions grew 12 times faster than all other goods and services combined 

As reported by the intelligence service, vegetables are most expensive in Chukotka. In June, the basket there cost 1,675 rubles, which is 5 times higher than the national average. The situation is not much better in Yakutia, where the basket cost 681 rubles, and in Kamchatka with its 629 rubles.

Looking at individual products, cabbage rose the most over the six months, from 34 to 58 rubles per kilogram, i.e., by 70%. Potatoes increased almost as much, from 43 to 73 rubles, plus 69%. Carrots rose by 52%, onions by 49%, and beets by 42%. Overall, the basket of potatoes, cabbage, onions, beets, and carrots in the Russian Federation rose on average from 205 to 320 rubles.

The absolute record holder in terms of price growth was the Samara region, where the basket increased in price by 97%, from 159 to 312 rubles. It is followed by the Moscow region with an increase of 93%, the Bryansk region with 92%, Mari El with 89%, the Ulyanovsk region with 86%, and the Penza region with 84%. These are not some depressed outskirts, but regions in the central part of the country, including the region around Moscow itself.

Even in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which are traditionally considered showcases of the Russian Federation's prosperity, prices rose noticeably. In Moscow, the basket rose by 76%, from 211 to 370 rubles. In St. Petersburg, the increase was 64%. In July, the trend did not change. According to Rosstat's weekly monitoring, since the beginning of the month, beets rose by another 4.8%, cabbage by 3.1%, potatoes by 2.8%
