At the Rakowicki Cemetery in Krakow, unknown individuals damaged the burial site of Ukrainian writer, scholar, and professor Bohdan Lepky, stealing a bronze bas-relief from the tombstone. This was reported by Fakt.pl, citing the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhii Tykhyi, writes UNN.

According to Tykhyi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine regards the incident as a deliberate provocation.

We regard this act of vandalism as a deliberate provocation aimed at further inciting hostility between Ukraine and the Republic of Poland

– said the MFA spokesperson.

The Consulate General of Ukraine in Krakow has contacted the police, the administration of the Rakowicki Cemetery, and the city authorities. The Ukrainian side called for a thorough investigation, identification of those involved in the crime, return or restoration of the stolen bas-relief, and ensuring proper security at the burial site.

Police are checking the circumstances

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasized that they expect a prompt investigation and prosecution of those responsible in accordance with Polish law.

We expect a prompt establishment of all circumstances of this act of vandalism, prosecution of those responsible in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Poland, as well as the adoption of effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future

The Krakow police told Fakt.pl that they received information about the incident on July 5 at around 12:00. Law enforcement officers have already inspected the scene and continue to establish all the circumstances.

We do not associate this incident with nationalist motives. The damage to the monument could have occurred over the past two weeks
