On Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a "red" level of danger for the areas of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad.
Heavy monsoon rains disrupted transport operations and forced the closure of schools in India's financial capital. The downpour also caused landslides along the expressway between Mumbai and neighboring Pune. It was closed, and traffic between the cities was paralyzed. Additionally, the bad weather affected air travel and long-distance train services.
In Mumbai, over 100 mm of precipitation fell, and in some areas up to 161 mm. This is the monthly rainfall norm for many European cities.
