The Georgian Ministry of Justice has prepared a technical framework for the registration of 'foreign agents', which will be launched on August 1. Failure to comply with the law will result in a fine of 25 thousand GEL.
The Ministry of Justice of Georgia has already prepared the technical basis necessary for the registration of non-governmental and media organizations in the Agency Law database. It will be launched on August 1. This was announced by the Minister of Justice of the country Rati Bregadze, reports UNN and cites the Georgian service of Radio Liberty
"Starting August 1, organizations that meet these criteria can already apply... everything [technical base] is ready... if the organization does not fulfill the requirements stipulated by law, does not obey the legislation of Georgia, you know. This means a fine of 25 thousand GEL," the minister said.
Despite calls from international partners, on May 28, the Georgian parliament overrode the presidential veto on the "law on agents." This law declares all civic and media organizations that receive funding from the country's strategic partners to be carriers of foreign influence.
After the law was passed, the European Union suspended some of its aid to Georgia, and the United States postponed military exercises indefinitely.
