Hungary and Ukraine have reached an agreement on expanding the rights of the Hungarian minority - Magyar

Ukraine has undertaken broad and comprehensive commitments regarding the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. If Kyiv introduces the relevant changes, the Hungarian government will agree to the start of the first stage of EU accession negotiations. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar on Facebook, reports UNN

We have reached a comprehensive agreement with Ukraine regarding the expansion of linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights of the Hungarian minority, which numbers hundreds of thousands of people. This agreement is the result of several weeks of intensive negotiations at the level of Hungarian and Ukrainian experts, involving political organizations of the Hungarian community of Transcarpathia and churches,

- Magyar reported.

According to him, the Ukrainian government has committed to implementing the discussed measures into its legislation in the near future.

Thanks to this, our compatriots in Transcarpathia will have much broader rights than before in the fields of education, culture, language use, and politics. Ukraine's commitments will also be reflected in the action plan that Ukraine must fulfill before the European Union. If this happens, the Hungarian government will give its consent to the opening of the first cluster of accession negotiations for Ukraine. Hungary still does not support accelerated EU accession negotiations. If Ukraine manages to close all 33 chapters of the accession negotiations within 10 or 15 years, our country will hold a legally binding referendum on this issue,

- Magyar added.

As a reminder,

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a meeting with the new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar in Berlin, urged him to support European policy regarding Ukraine.
