Law enforcement agencies have detained and served a notice of suspicion to a serviceman from the Chernihiv region who defected to the side of the Russian occupiers at the beginning of the full-scale invasion and helped them loot stores. This was reported by UNN with reference to the State Bureau of Investigation.

According to the investigation, between February and April 2022, he assisted Russian military personnel in stealing goods from stores, specifically from a grocery store in the village of Nova Basan, Chernihiv region.

This is evidenced by CCTV footage from the store that was targeted by the looting.

The detained suspect has been notified of suspicion of theft combined with breaking and entering into a premises or storage facility, or causing significant damage to the victim (Part 3 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to 6 years.

As established by the investigation, the man had previously been convicted under Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason). However, a higher court, without examining the evidence, issued a decision to close the criminal proceedings and released the accused from custody, the SBI stated.
