Former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at the age of 74. This was reported by the state news agency of Qatar, without giving a cause of death, writes UNN.

Details

Sheikh Hamad led the country from 1995 to 2013. It was during his rule that Qatar transformed from a small Gulf state into an influential international player in diplomacy, media, and investment. During this time, the country founded the Al Jazeera television network, acquired the London department store Harrods, and won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In 2013, he voluntarily abdicated the throne, handing power to his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Such a move was rare for Gulf countries, where a change of power usually occurs after the death of a ruler or a coup.

Architect of modern Qatar

Sheikh Hamad himself came to power in 1995, ousting his father in a bloodless palace coup. He studied at the British military academy Sandhurst, and before ascending to the throne, he was responsible for the development of the country's oil and gas industries.

During his rule, Qatar significantly strengthened its international influence, however, Doha's independent foreign policy often caused dissatisfaction among allies due to its support for contacts with Iran, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood. Also controversial was the editorial policy of the Al Jazeera television channel, which was criticized for biased coverage of events.

Announcing the transfer of power in 2013, Sheikh Hamad said: "The future awaits you, children of this homeland, as you enter a new era where young leadership raises the flag."
