The decision of the International Chess Federation Council to temporarily suspend the membership of the Chess Federation of Russia for failing to comply with the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport is important and fundamental for Ukraine. The FIDE case should serve as a signal for other international federations as well. This was stated by the Minister of Youth and Sports Matviy Bidnyi, UNN reports.

Details

The membership of the Russian Chess Federation has been officially suspended by FIDE. This means that for the next three years, no Russian team or chess player will be able to compete in international competitions under national symbols. For us, this is an important and very fundamental decision. Because for years, Russia has been trying to use sports and chess as a tool of influence, and during the war, also to legalize the sporting occupation of Ukrainian territories. This is exactly what Ukraine has systematically challenged, and this is what has finally received a clear response,

- Bidnyi wrote.

He added that this is the result of consistent work, in particular by the Chess Federation of Ukraine and the team of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

The FIDE case should serve as a signal for other international federations. The aggressor country, which violates international law, occupies foreign territories, and tries to misappropriate Ukrainian sports, has no place in the global sports movement,

 - Bidnyi added.
