EU to develop its own AI infrastructure to reduce dependence on tech giants – von der Leyen

The EU will create AI gigafactories to train models on public infrastructure. This will help retain promising tech startups within the bloc.

The European Union plans to strengthen its technological sovereignty and create its own infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence. This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during the G7 summit, reports UNN.
Commenting on the issue of Europe's dependence on big tech companies, von der Leyen recalled the European Commission's recent initiative regarding technological sovereignty.
"It is important for us to have our own infrastructure and our own technological presence. We do not seek isolation, but we want to cooperate with reliable partners and at the same time develop our own capabilities,"
According to the President of the European Commission, one of the key elements of this strategy will be the creation of so-called AI gigafactories.
"Gigafactories will enable European startups to test and train their artificial intelligence models on public infrastructure. This is extremely important, as we have many promising companies and we do not want them to leave the European Union,"
She added that the issue of technological sovereignty covers not only artificial intelligence but also semiconductor production, cloud services, and other strategic digital technologies.
"The technological sovereignty package covers all this work and defines the direction of Europe's development in the field of high technology,"
