EU plans to tighten migrant deportation rules – current rates are considered insufficient

The European Union must strengthen the policy of returning illegal migrants and introduce stricter deportation rules. This was stated by European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner, DW reports, writes UNN.

According to him, in 2025, 28% of migrants who were required to leave the bloc's territory were returned from the EU – this is the highest figure in the last decade. In total, over 491 thousand people left EU countries, of which about 135 thousand were actually deported.
Despite the increase in figures, the European Commission considers them insufficient. Brunner emphasized that the current mechanisms "work inefficiently," so it is necessary to adopt a new regulation as soon as possible.

- mandatory requirements for persons subject to deportation
- possibility of longer detention pending removal
- deportation to special centers in third countries
Pressure on third countries
The EU also plans to intensify external pressure. In particular, cooperation with third countries on migration may be linked to visa policy, trade, and financial assistance.
