Cuba's National Electric Power Company reported that the causes of the accident are still unknown, and specialists are conducting an investigation. According to Reuters, at the time of the accident, almost two-thirds of the country were without electricity.
According to media reports, this is the third large-scale collapse of the Cuban energy system since the beginning of the year. At the same time, short-term regional power outages in the country are a fairly common occurrence.
Cuba's energy system is in a critical state due to fuel shortages. After the US imposed an oil embargo in January, the country provides only about 40% of its own fuel needs. In addition, 730,000 barrels of oil delivered by a Russian tanker at the end of March were completely used up by the end of April.
Cuban authorities also regularly implement planned power outages, which in some regions can last more than 24 hours.
