China arrests US citizen on suspicion of espionage

Beijing has confirmed the detention of US citizen Min Jing in the city of Kunming. The Myanmar affairs analyst is suspected of espionage and threatening national security.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday confirmed the arrest of U.S. citizen Min Jing, stating that the American is suspected of espionage and threatening China's national security, UNN reports, citing Reuters.

China notified the U.S. Consulate General in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou of the arrest, Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press conference, responding to a question about a New York Times report that Min Jing disappeared in Kunming in southwestern China last week.
AFP clarifies that China stated on Friday it had detained on suspicion of espionage a U.S. citizen who is also an analyst for a political think tank specializing in Myanmar.
