The replacement is planned to be carried out during the scheduled outage of the power unit in May. As a result, the reactor will operate simultaneously on Russian and American fuel.
At the end of 2022, the management of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria signed a ten-year contract with Westinghouse to supply nuclear fuel for the plant's fifth power unit.
It was announced that the license to use this new fuel will be obtained in 2024. However, the contract does not provide for the disposal of spent fuel, so it will be stored in a specialized warehouse at the plant.
Earlier, the Bulgarian government lifted restrictions on diversification of nuclear fuel supplies for VVER-1000 reactors.
