Britain and 11 other European countries agree on tougher measures against Russia's “shadow fleet”

The UK and 11 European countries have agreed to take joint action against Russian ships trying to circumvent sanctions. The participating countries will check the documents of suspicious ships in key sea straits.
During a summit in Tallinn, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom agreed to stop and deter the ships of Russia's shadow fleet. This is stated on the website of the Estonian government, UNN reports.
Russia is using its shadow fleet to circumvent sanctions and mitigate their impact on Russia. Twelve countries have agreed to disrupt and deter Russia's shadow fleet to prevent illegal operations and increase Russia's costs of war against Ukraine,
According to the Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Mihal, Russia's shadow fleet poses a threat to European security, economy and environment.
Those who choose to operate in the shadows must face the consequences. We are taking coordinated measures to deter Russia's shadow fleet and their attempts to evade sanctions,
The United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Finland and Estonia instruct their maritime forces to demand appropriate proof of insurance from suspected shadowy vessels passing through the English Channel, the Danish Grand Belt, the Sound between Denmark and Sweden and the Gulf of Finland.
It is noted that the information collected by the participating states, including those vessels that decided not to respond to the requests, will be evaluated, after which joint actions will be taken.
