Agency for the Protection of Servicemen's Rights to be Established in Ukraine

Ukraine is planning to establish an Agency for the Protection of Servicemen's Rights to combat abuses in the armed forces and ensure transparency.

Ukraine has decided to set up an agency for the protection of servicemen's rights within the Defense Ministry. The agency plans to start its work in the nearest future. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense for Social Development Natalia Kalmykova during the event "Rights of Servicemen: Joint Steps on the Way to Victory," a UNN correspondent reports.

After consultations with the Ombudsman for Human Rights, relevant departments, and members of the public, which have been ongoing since our team arrived, it was decided to create an Agency for the Protection of Servicemen's Rights within the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The purpose of this agency is to counteract abuses and other offenses in the AFU, as well as to create conditions for the activities of the AFU to be accountable and transparent to the public

According to her, the Agency will help prevent violations of the rights of servicemen, and will prevent the practice of inefficient spending of resources and bad governance.

"This Agency will include departments that will monitor and analyze cases of rights violations that come through various channels to the Ministry of Defense, both written appeals and telephone calls and analysis of the information available on social networks. It will also include gender advisers, an inspection department, and the public will be involved as an advisory body," Kalmykova said.

According to her, the Agency is expected to be launched in the near future.

"We are going through legal procedures, we have prepared the concept itself, we are coordinating it. We plan to launch (the Agency - ed.) in the near future and inform the public, the media and the entire community that there is now this body to which they can turn and receive support and protection" - Kalmykova said.
