In Kyiv, an obstetrician-gynecologist was found guilty of improper performance of professional duties, which led to the death of a woman after childbirth. The court sentenced her to two years in prison and also ordered her to pay 15 million hryvnias in moral damages to the two children of the deceased, who were left without parents after the tragedy. In July 2023, a pregnant woman was brought to one of the centers for reproductive and perinatal care. The examination and subsequent medical assistance were provided by the on-duty obstetrician-gynecologist. As a result of fetal death and subsequent labor activity, the victim suffered injuries to the birth canal, which in turn caused the woman's death.
The prosecutor proved in court that the obstetrician-gynecologist, having all the conditions and opportunities for diagnosis, possessing a sufficient qualification level, did not properly monitor the patient from the moment she gave birth to a stillborn child and was in an agonal state. At the same time, with timely diagnosis by the doctor of the bodily injuries caused during childbirth and adequate therapy, the woman's life could have been saved.
The deceased patient left behind two young children, who are now orphans, since after the death of his wife, their father became seriously ill and soon died.
By the verdict of the Obolon District Court of the city of Kyiv, the doctor was found guilty of improper performance of professional duties, which led to the death of the patient.
The court sentenced her to two years in prison and also granted the civil lawsuits of the children's grandparents to recover 15 million hryvnias in moral damages from her in favor of the deceased patient's children.
