Maria Branias Morera, a Spaniard who was considered the oldest person in the world, died at the age of 117. After her death, 116-year-old Japanese Tomiko Itooka became the oldest living person.

The oldest person in the world, Spaniard Maria Branias Morera, who was born in the United States and survived two world wars, died at the age of 117, her family said on Tuesday in X, UNN reports.

"Maria Branias has left us. She died the way she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain," her family said.

For more than a year and a half, Branias was considered the oldest person in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. Last year, her daughter attributed her mother's longevity to her good genes, DW reports. According to her daughter, Branias has never been hospitalized in her life.

After Branias's death, the oldest living person in the world is Japanese Tomiko Itooka, born on May 23, 1908, who is 116 years old, AFP reports, citing the US Gerontological Research Group.
