Day of Remembrance of the Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon

According to the new (New Julian) calendar, on July 27, Saint Panteleimon is honored, who is considered the main patron of doctors and the sick. Among the people, this holiday was called "Panteleimon the Healer" or "Palii".

Traditionally, on this day, healers collected medicinal herbs, as it was believed they were endowed with special power. At the same time, people avoided working in the field, fearing that lightning ("Palii") could burn the harvest. Often on this day, pies with young cabbage were baked.

For those who follow the old (Julian) calendar: on July 27, the memory of the Apostle of the 70, Aquila is honored. In folk tradition, this day was called "Aquila" or "Dozory". Peasants posted guards near the fields so that winds and sudden storms would not scatter the hay collected in stacks.
