According to the new (New Julian) calendar, on July 24, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the first saints canonized by the Rus' Church — the brothers Boris and Gleb, who died at the hands of their older brother Svyatopolk the Accursed. Among the people, it was believed that strong summer thunderstorms often occur on this day, so peasants avoided working in the fields to prevent lightning from burning the grain and hay.
