Vučić promised Serbia a new government headed by an endocrinologist without political experience

Serbia will have a new government by April 18, and a newcomer to politics, endocrinologist Djuro Macut, will become the prime minister, President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Sunday, UNN writes, citing Politico.

Details

The previous government of this Balkan country collapsed in March after months of protest movement caused by the deadly roof collapse at the railway station and supported by public anger over corruption and a departure from democratic norms.

"The new government will have a great task to continue to maintain peace and stability, to act patiently and with restraint. The government must have a clear commitment to the future, and our desire and intention is to return Serbia to the pedestal of the winner and the fastest growing economy by the end of the year," Vucic said.

The new prime minister, an endocrinologist with no political experience, is likely to hold office until at least 2027, when Serbia will hold simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections. Legislators must approve his candidacy by April 18, otherwise they risk preparing the ground for early elections.

Supplement

Vucic indicated that he expects to meet with US President Donald Trump in the coming months and will raise the issue of tariffs.

On April 2, as part of a wave of US duties on countries around the world, Trump announced the introduction of a 38 percent duty for Serbia, which is due to take effect this week. This figure was the highest in Europe, although some overseas territories of European countries will be taxed with higher duties.
