In particular, the reason for this step was the decisions of the government's Georgian Dream party, which contradict democratic principles and distance the country from Euro-Atlantic integration.
The decision of the Georgian Dream to stop the process of Georgia's accession to the European Union runs counter to the country's constitutional obligations to seek integration into the EU and NATO. Such a move by the government, according to the United States, increases Georgia's vulnerability to the influence of the Kremlin.
Washington also condemned the excessive use of force by Georgian police during the dispersal of peaceful protests. The American side stressed the need to ensure the rights to freedom of Assembly and expression.
The Georgian government is accused of violating key principles of strategic partnership, such as democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, freedom of speech and the fight against corruption. These actions, according to the United States, undermine trust between the two countries, which was the reason for suspending cooperation.
Washington called on the Georgian authorities to immediately return to democratic reforms, ensure a transparent investigation of violations in parliamentary elections and repeal laws that restrict fundamental freedoms.
