Reasons for the failure
The talks were intended as a continuation of previous contacts between the parties; however, Tehran expressed distrust toward Washington amid the blockade of Iranian ports and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran insisted that the talks should take place in an indirect format.

Meanwhile, Iranian military officials warned of a "decisive response" in the event of further US actions, including a naval blockade.
Pakistan acted as a mediator in efforts to restore dialogue between the parties.
